Women’s Health: Understanding Fertility Challenges and Hormonal Balance
Fertility Challenges
Fertility issues often begin with ovulation disturbances. These may appear when ovarian function decreases, even before age 40, or in conditions such as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). Hormonal imbalances caused by thyroid dysfunction—whether underactive or overactive—can also disrupt ovulation. In some cases, chronic illnesses like cancer or AIDS interfere with the release of eggs from the follicles.
Fertility problems can also stem from the uterus or fallopian tubes. Pelvic surgeries or infections may lead to scarring in the fallopian tubes or cervix, and in severe cases, cervical shortening. Conditions such as uterine fibroids (myomas, fibroids) and endometriosis also affect reproductive function.
Certain substances, including marijuana and cocaine, may cause significant ovulation disturbances and may impair the fallopian tubes. Treatments like chemotherapy or radiation can damage ovarian function, sometimes permanently.

Nutrition for Natural Hormonal Balance
Balanced nutrition plays an important role in supporting hormonal health. Increasing intake of fiber, especially lignans found in flax seeds and whole grains, can help reduce estrogen reabsorption. A diet rich in phytoestrogens supports healthier hormone balance by preventing estrogen from binding directly to cells.
Eating nutritious, varied meals with plenty of fruits and vegetables helps maintain a healthy body weight—an important factor in overall hormonal balance.
